On April 27th and 28th the European Forum is organising a fact-finding mission to Georgia. The delegation, consisting of representatives of different European social democratic parties and foundations, will have meetings with representatives of Georgian political parties, the Georgian government, international organisations on the ground and NGOs to get a clear picture of the political situation in the country.
The mission comes at a time of political turmoil in Georgia, following an eventful year. Internal political tension between the opposition and President Saakashvili has escalated to a point where the opposition has decided to go on non-stop street protests, and has vowed to continue as long as Mr Saakashvili remains in power. Since April 9th a crowd of protesters has been gathered in front of the Parliament demanding the President’s resignation.
With a certain lack of news on Georgia in the Western media, the delegation is hoping to get a more clear picture of the proceedings on the ground by way of the bilateral meetings described above. A report on the visit will follow.
