On the 11th of March, AG Survey Company released a poll which suggests that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), although still ahead in polls, is losing votes and it seems unlikely that AKP will sustain its dominance it has enjoyed in the last elections. This is not particularly a result of the progress of its rivals but a consequence of the economic crisis which has hit Turkey rather hard.
The data from the poll shows that AKP province mayoralty votes might fall below 40% in the local elections which will be held on the 29th of March. Director of the AG Survey Company, Adil Gur, argued that AKP will be ‘punished’ for the effects of the economic crisis and the party might lose from 3-4 % of the votes up to 15-20% of the votes. He added, that while AKP will still strongly dominate in Istanbul, the party vote share will drop from 60 to 45 % in Eastern Anatolia.
